The best comedies are often the ones that are the most quotable, heavy with lines from iconic scenes that can easily be slipped into conversation.
The best comedies are often the ones that are the most quotable, heavy with lines from iconic scenes that can easily be slipped into conversation. Movies like "Caddyshack" have too many high points to count, as do other classics like "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and "The Big Lebowski." Everyone has different comedic tastes, which makes choosing the best among the comedy classics seem like a fool's errand. Undaunted by the challenge, the team at PrettyFamous -- an entertainment data site powered by Graphiq -- ranked the 100 greatest comedy films of all time (we'll look at the top 26).
To do this, PrettyFamous took into consideration all movies with more than 50,000 IMDb votes in the comedy genre and ranked them on their Smart Rating -- a score out of 100 that takes into account a movie's IMDb rating, Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer and Audience Score, Gracenote rating, Metacritic Metascore and the inflation-adjusted domestic box office gross. PrettyFamous only included films labeled strictly as comedies, and did not consider hybrid films like romantic comedies, dark comedies, etc. Children's movies also were not included.
As much as the team tried to make objective decisions on the best comedies ever, humor is often a subjective matter, so readers should feel free to express which films they felt were overrated, underrated or left out altogether.
Note: Plot summaries were sourced (with minor edits) from Gracenote.
